just bought a brand new sav 12 f--class topped it with a sightron 10x 50 x 60 its a 6.5x284 8 twist 30 inch barrel took it right out of the box and did a bedding job on it and adjusted trigger to 8 oz there is no dought in my mind that is not set up right, shot today for the first time it was windy and cold but I decided to zero and do a break in at the same time I started with a max load of hybrid 100 and sierra 107-s just touching shot three 3 shot groups of one half inch at 100 yards but a 5 shot group was 1 inch I was expecting a little better than that any body got any advice or loads ? what should I try next put on a new barrel or just chunk the whole thing in the river? I really don't want to shoot much farther than about 700 yards and prefer to stay with light bullets if I can what size 5 shot groups should I expect at 100 yards with a factory rifle set up like this?

I've heard from guys at the shop that have had rifles that acted this way because the bullet was "over stabilized" and the group would actually stay the same or tighten up at further distances...I personally haven't experienced this, but I've heard of people who have.

I would try shooting further distances, and try out the 123 SMK's or 123 A-max's, they both have better BC than the 107's and are not too heavy

You just need to do some load development, very few things that are worth while, are stellar right out of the box.

You just need to do some load development

For sure.

Got a Shilen in 6.5x55 last week and my first few reloads were 3 shot bug holes and one or two shots that opened it up. Yesterday I used another powder/bullet combination and shot a 5 shot bug hole. Nice to fine one that shoots that early.

Don't worry about barrel break in or "over stabilization"....a bullet is either stable or it is not.

Sierra's accuracy load with the 107gr Match King using a 26" Savage BVSS rifle was 53gr of AA-3100 @3100fps. That was also their Max load.
Personally I would go with the Norma Diamond Target 130gr Bullets. High BC .550-.590 and outstanding quality.
I have shot those in 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x284, and 6.5x55. They became my go to bullet for all of them.

If you work with that rifle I'll bet it ends up shooting at long range as good or better as you can hold it!

I have a savage 12 F class in 6.5 284 also . I shoot 140 &142 sierra -Hornady & bergers in my rifle .It will shoot a group almost as small at 200 yds as it will shoot at 100 yds. I shoot mine at long range so i shoot the heavy bullets only... bionicbob

IMO the 142 smk's are the bullet for the 6.5x284.

I really don't want to shoot much farther than about 700 yards and prefer to stay with light bullets

Maybe the 123's, but with an 8 twist, try them out to 300 yards. 6.5x284 is a lot of bullet pushing the lighter bullets. My 6.5x47 loves Scenar 123's. Your 6.5x284 should push the 142 around 3,000 to 3,100 fps which is plenty enough for 1,000 yards.

You may give this a try, start lower and work up to 51grns. 120gr Sierra Match Kings, oal 2.934 with 51 gr Reloader 22
