Do any of you know of 7.62x39 barrels available for Savage rifles? I'm wanting to make a scout type rifle on my stevens action....16" sporter weight in a lightweight stock and a forward mounted scope. I see that switchbarrel has a 20", but he is no longer selling anything due to family illness, per his web page. I don't know why its not offered more, a semi inexpensive barrel in x39 would be a good seller, and a blast to plink with, and cheap to shoot. And savage sells their 7.62x39 mags, so you might be able to get it mag fed.

Some thoughts:
They are available from Savage as Savage sells rifles in that caliber.(Model 10 FMP for example)
Or you could custom order one (probably not as inexpensive as you would prefer)
Or you could order a threaded blank in .308 (more selection of bullets than .310) and have it chambered by your local gunsmith.

Available from Savage directly, eh....I realized they made that rifle, never considered the barrels. I will go check on that.

Will need 7.62x39 bolt head, it is smaller than 308. 7.62x39 bolt head is same as 6ppc.

you may find a better path than I did, but I just finished building a Savage in 7.62x39. I used a .308 barrel and had it cut off and recrowned. I ordered a chamber adapter online that converts the rifle's chamber to accept the 7.62x39 rounds. (Was pretty unsure about this deal, but it has worked quite well actually). I then sent my bolt to SSS to have it converted to the PPC bolt head. Still working on getting the correct magazine to correct feeding issues (Savage has been out of them), but the rifle shoots really well. Even with crappy steel cased Russion milsurp ammo, it will shoot around 1.5" groups at 100yds. The rounds are so horribly out of spec that about 3 out of 10 will not even chamber where the bolt will close. Pretty fun to shoot and has almost zero recoil.

If you reload you might consider doing your build in 300 AAC Blackout. It is a ballistic twin to the 7.62x39, MUCH more accurate, no special size bolt head (same as .223), 16.5" barrels readily availible, same .308 bullet as all other .30 calibers, match bullets galore availible, etc., etc., etc. You get the idea. And if you reload it would be less expensive to shoot than buying that junk 7.62x39 ammo out there.

Or shoot reduced loads in a 308?
