The Leica's are very nice, that's what I use for prairie dogs. The Nikon's, Leupold's, and Bushnell's don't have enough of an effective range. The Zeiss and the Swavorski are also very nice.

We shoot pd's out to 1000 yrds. Any rangefinder will probably need to be mounted on a tri-pod for that long range use unless you have something large to range off of, like a tractor or building. It is incredibly hard to hold it still enough for long range stuff to get a good read without a tri-pod, with that being said, with a tri-pod and the Leica 1600 I can range pd mounds out to at least 1000 yrds which is the farthest we can see.

I like my Swaro Laser Guide, but it has stayed home since I got my Bushnell Fusion 1600's. Decent binoculars paired with a great rangefinder.

id stick with the leica. i have owned 2 swarovskis and im not happy with them. the leica has a narrower beam
which is helpful at the longer distances. you are correct in assuming a tripod is helpful. i use a walking stick/shooting rest
for mine when im pd hunting. the leg is adjustable and it screws to the unit. resting your elbows on a shooting table works also.
