Hey guys,

Just bought my first rifle - Axis 223.

It did not come with a scope, so I am looking to buy one. The rifle came with a 2 piece weaver style mount. So now all I need are a set of rings and a scope. For the scope I will buy a Nikon Prostaff 3-9 x 40.

My question is regarding rings. It seems a lot of people have had issues getting the right set of rings so that the scope can clear the bolt properly.

Given the two piece mount the rifle came with, and a Nikon Prostaff scope on the way, what are the proper rings to purchase?

Thank you very much!

If you are going to use the bases that came with the rifle, you are going the have to replace one of the bases to a Weaver extension base number 402M or 402s for a stainless rifle. I used the high 4x4 Weaver rings with the Prostaff.

RSG is right. To use that scope you will need either the extension base he mentioned or a one-piece base with multiple slots. Many scopes, the Nikon included, don't have enough room between the front and rear bells to fit the wide spacing of the 2-piece base.

As to rings, there are many good ones. I like the Weaver Quad Locks -- inexpensive, easy to find, rugged. For me, I want the medium height for a 40mm scope, but if your scope is bigger or your shooting style more heads-up than mine, high would be the way to go.
