re-threading take off barrel for savage

Does anyone know if i can take a remington 700 barel, and have it re-threaded to fit a small shank savage??

Yes, you can. But, Rem barrels are generally of the same quality or less than the Savage barrels.

You'd have to be able get the barrels for cheap or free, and the same for the threading/chambering to make it worthwhile.

I have had a barrel retreaded from a 700 to fit the savage small shank. I bought the barrel with this in mind, it was a hart barrel that had low round count. If you have to contract the lath work out your looking at adding on $100 to the cost of the barrel.

In my case I picked up the hart barrel for $40 because it had a short tenon, changing over to savage took care of that so I had a hart barrel for my savage in 243 impoved for $140.

Thank you for the info, i have also have a hart barrel in a .260 from a previous remington build. That i was hoping i could have re-threaded for a new savage build instead of collecting dust lol. Thanks again

Funny.....my favorite re-threaded barrel is also a Hart. It came off a Nesika chambered in 300RUM. Now it's a 300wsm.

wouldn't you have to shorten the remington barrel to do it, because the shank size of the remington is the same as the small shank savage?

Yes, you have to remove the Remington tennon. Then the shoulder gets turned down to become the Savage tennon.

If you remove the thread tennon from the barrel then turn down and re-thread it, you would have to machine the chamber again because iirc on a remington 700 the thread tennon counting the recoil lug is ~.880" so then the barrel would need to be re-chambered as well...

The one that I had done they didn't remove the thread tennon. A savage barrel at thr threads is 1.05 and a remington at the threads is 1.0625. not alot of difference but when you turn down the threads to the savage diameter it cleans them off. then when threaded for the savage your good to go! I had to do 0 chamber work.

I find that hard to believe, considering that a Savage uses 20 tpi, and a Remington uses 16. There is no way to get a decent cleanup of threads. Besides, the Remington chamber has a couterbore of .155" deep. Me thinks someone fibbed a little.

The one that I had done the gunsmith must of not charged me for rechambering. I guess I got a deal.

The counter bore is still there I believe . I'll take some pics when I get home.

So that I'm clear. My barrel was cut off at the chamber end and turned down, and then rechambered!

I'm sorry but the difference between 1.05 & 1.0625 is only twelve thousands of an inch that will not clean off the remington threads
and if you did what you said all you did was cross thread the barrel.
in realty the savage threads are really 1.062x20 not 1.05x20
