View Full Version : Will a Stock Savage .243 Stabilize the 105 Hdy A-Max?

Just curious if anyone has decent results, shooting the 6mm 105 grn Hdy A-Max out of a stock Savage .243. Hornady has a note that a 1:10 twist will not stabilize the bullet. I **believe** the recent stock Savage sporters, like mine, have a 1:9.25 twist. Just wanted to know before I buy some.
Thanks,

Mark

I have shot 107 smk's out of my VLP 243, very accurate, but never shot over 200 yards.

100 grains seems to be a magic number for a 243 to stabalize properly due to the twist rate. I have shot 100 grains with great accuracy with both of my 243's, so I would think the 105 grain with the 9.25 twist should be fine.

I doubt it. I know most of the remmy 700's with the 9 1/8 twist will shoot em but I don't think the savages will with their 9.25 twist. My 700 shot em great out to 600yds but I havent' tried em in my savcage but know a couple guys that hav tried and they wouldn't stabilize. Then again, all rifles are different.

Absolutely. Mine loved them and shot them out to 800 no problem under 39.5 grains of H4350. It would hold under half inch at 100.

A very common question. Unfortunately, the answer is not as common. Many get it to work well, and some have just terrible results. It seems to be very dependent on each individual barrel.

The 2 old 10 twist dont want anything to do with the 105Amax, in fact they prefer the 55 Noslers/H414 and not much else BUT the three newer barrels will throw them very well.....Have yet to have the sporter group anything bigger than MOA with three shots and most 1/2 that.

My factory barrel stabilized them with no issues. Under a stout load of 7828ssc it really had some bark to it.

They shoot well out of my 12fv. 39grains imr 4350 3023 fps. I have shot them out to 900 yards. great bullet for coyotes, deer and antelope.

Yes. It seems you have to be within 95% of max velocity however.

I loaded some for a buddy of mine. 42.5gr of Ramshot Hunter, 105gr A-max with Winchester primers. It does a little bigger than MOA at 200y.

I'm glad to see someone post who has used this bullet on game. I am in the process of building a 6 Dasher sporter and would like to use this bullet. Luckus

I have taken antelope from 90 yards to 630 yards and deer out to 420. Every time the bullet has done its job and all but one had an exit. The one with out an exit was a deer this last year at 420 yards and the bullet hit the shoulder blade, 2 ribs on both sides, and what little of the bullets that was left stopped on the off side shoulder blade. The deer looked like it had been hit with a sledge hammer. DRT. I dont think I would shoot anything bigger that deer with it. unless it was close and in the boiler room not the shoulder.
