An old .300 99 in need of some TLC

Hi all, new member here from New Mexico. Long story short, I'm getting back into rifles and likely hunting even though my father never really made a point of instilling a love of either in me (not a complaint against my dad!). I do have my grandfather's 300 Savage that I'd like to use for shooting and hopefully hunting. This long gun has been sitting in a bag for 20 years, though, and needs some loving. I would really appreciate it if I can get some advice on how best to go about getting it cleaned up. It deserves better respect than it was given and it means something to me. One neat thing about it is that I found my grandfather's survival kit in the buttplate - it included some waterproof matches and other small items he might have needed if stuck out on the NM-AZ border.

It's a serial number 27xxxx, so I gather it was made in 1928. It has some pretty serious rust on the surface but the bore looks pretty good at the end. I'll need to put a bore light it in, and look closely.

If any of you would have suggestions for how to fix this up I would appreciate it. I would like to do things that keep its value in the very, very slim chance I ever want to sell it, though.

Poor old gun is what I refer to as a hybrid rat.

I think it might have been a model 1899 250-3000 when it started life, at least thats what the forearm and serial number match. Then Grampa switched the barrel, I can tell because it has a style 7 barrel address and if the barrel was from the same era as the serial number it would have had a style 5 barrel address. Also, I think the buttstock is off a post war model 99 EG.

I'd take some fine steel wool and some gun oil and just lightly rub the rust off it but don't push on the steel wool real hard and use alot of oil.
