Will the Savage scout mount work on my new Savage Axis SR? if not is there a mount that will work?

That's not a scout mount Bob, that's a standard 1-piece rail. What he's looking for is one that mounts forward of the action like shown below.

I'm curious, whats the purpose for a mount like this? pistol scope?

A few decades ago (early 1980's) some gun writer by the name of Jeff Cooper came up with this crazy idea`r to mount a scope further forward on a rifle chambered in .308 Win and call it a "scout" rifle. Of course given this writer's notoriety at the time every Tom, Dick and Harry who read the piece instantly had to have one - not because they needed one or they thought it was a good idea that made sense - but rather they just had to have one because Mr. Cooper said they did because he thought his idea`r was the greatest thing since sliced bread.
