i got a stevens model 200 30-06. stock everything. ino if i dont have the scope and stock, and possibly trigger to even support 400 yards this post is pointless. just asking to see if a aftermarket barrel is needed? my current barrel twist is the stock sporter 1:10

Kinda depends on what you want it to do. If your wanting 1/2 MOA groups or to shoot the rifle all day with no POI change when the barrel heats up then probably not. But if your wanting decent accuracy 1-1.5 MOA and to use it as a hunting or slow fire range gun thern it should work fine. My buddies stevens .308 w/ good ammo was a 1.25 MOA gun out to 500yds until it was 'smithed then he was sub MOA all day.

My '06 shoots fine out to range - but like david said, my use is just hunting or slow fire for getting ready for hunting. For that purpose, it shoots minute of elk, so I'm good.

so basically if i shoot at the range slow and take breaks, and just hunt, the stock barrel is fine?
if i ever decide to get one anyway what barrel do you guys suggest??

i shoot 125gr for coyotes, and 165-180 for normal usage, as in deer, target, and just shooting **** lol

I agree with all of the above post. I had a Stevens 200 (I ultimately re-barreled it) in .308 that would whack the 12"x12" plate all day long at 400 yards, and I just never let it cool down. But for a first or second "cold barrel" shot out to 500 yards....what ever medium game was in the crosshairs was pretty much gonna be seeing my field dressing knife soon.

If your going to rebarrel it, my barrels of choice have been Shilen. I'm sure others are good, but I've had excellent results with those. I'd go with a heavy varmint style at a minimum.

FWIW

As long as the accuracy meets your expectations then yes it will work. As for a barrel for those applications a 1-in-10 twist, varmit contour, 20" or 22" would be plenty. If you wanted to stretch it out distance wise go up to a 24-26"
