Model 112 22-250 twist rate?

I just purchased a Savage Model 112 heavy barrel chambered for 22-250.
• Sn F104849
• Black, synthetic stock
• 26” Barrel length
• 7/8” barrel OD at business end
• Stamped barrel markings: |3| |3|, 63, D, SP-9
• "4849" freehand etched on bolt

Does any of this information help identify the twist rate?

I have tried the cleaning rod/patch method to check the barrel twist and do not come up with the same answer twice.

well, your model 12 was offered in both 1:9 or 1:12 at times, i wasn't able to dig anything up.

Bill, put a snug patch on a cleaning rod, start patch & rod into bore, mark rod with sharpie, now push rod thru bore. When cleaning rod makes one revolution make another mark. Measure between marks. 9 inch between marks makes it 9 twist, 12 inch would be 12 twist.

if it is a 9 twist it SHOULD say so on the side of the barrel, right after stating the chambering(i.e. 22-250rem 9 twist).

Since it is an older 112 in a short action chambering it very well may be a 14 twist.

What is the measurement between the 2 action screw(5.00", 4.52", or 4.25")?

The two screws that hold the stock to the action/barrel are 5" apart. (or, closer to ~5.05")

Can the "SP-9" stamped on the barrel be an indication of the twist rate?

If it's the factory original barrel it will be a 1-14 twist rate. Savage stopped making guns chambered for short-action cartridges on long-actions in 1998 when they came out with a true short action (Gen 2), and they didn't start offering the 1-9 twist option for 22-250's until 2006 or 2007 with the launch of the right-bolt/left-port Model 12 Long Range Precision Varmint model.

Only way to know for sure is to do the cleaning rod thing mentioned by "short round". Make sure you do it a few times because sometimes the patch will slip on the riflings and measure a bit different.

That's the proof stamp from the factory. SP = Savage Proof. The -9 is who person proofed it.
