Here's the ordering info if you would like to get your old Savage firearm lettered by the historian, it's well worth it, you will usually get a letter stating what your gun left the factory as, when it was accepted at the factory and where it went to when it left the factory, as well as some standard descriptions of your firearm.

Savage 1895, 1899 and 99 guys should know that any lever actions over the serial number of 372XXX will not get as much info as the paperwork on those guns has been destroyed but you will still gets details of the order number.

You can also letter Savage pistols, model 40, 45, 1920, 20/26, shotguns, pretty much anything with a serial number made before WWII.

The Savage firearm company has changed hands recently they are no longer offering historical letters. The ledger information on the pistols is being transitioned to a museum who will be providing historical information on the serial numbered pistols later in the future. In a phone call yesterday Savage indicated that they will post on their website once this transition is complete so that collectors can contact the museum (Museum name unknown at this time) regarding the acquisition of a letter.

This morning I received this response to my inquiry regarding historical letters from Savage:

"Savage Arms is no longer able to perform Historical lookups of firearms. As of July 2020, we have begun transferring our Historical records to the Cody Firearms Museum. Once there, they will be professionally conserved and archived, ensuring they are preserved and accessible for current and future Savage collectors. This process is ongoing, but once completed, historical requests should be directed to the Cody Firearms Museum.

For information on modern production guns (1995 and newer) you are welcome to contact the Savage Service Department."

Yep apparently Savage just couldn't handle it and Cody took over the letters.

Everything went to hell when John Callahan retired.

Glad to see this happened as the Cody Firearm Museum is the best place for these documents and records. They also have the records for Winchester, Marlin, L.C. Smith, and Ithaca / Lefever.
