Savage 1907 Nickel Plated

Ok, I am new here and need some help. I bought this pistol today because it was just awesome looking, and I really like Savage. I am assuming it is a model 1907. The serial number puts it at 1917. I have not been able to find any other ones like it, so I am not sure if it is a factory nickel job or not. I have read a few places that there were nickel guns from the factory, but they are pretty rare. Any information you all can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sure looks legit, except the grips, looks like someone had those made for it. Are they real ivory or am I just seeing things?

A couple things you can do to start is get the gun lettered by J. Callahan, he's the Savage Arms historian. I'll sticky his info at the top of the page tonight.

Secondly, spend the money and get the book "Savage Pistols" by Bailey Brower Jr. I've spoken to Bailey a couple times on the phone and he really knows his stuff. He'd love to get a look at that gun.

Yes, it is a model 1907, whats the serial number range of it? There are different variations to the 1907.

Yes. I believe they are real ivory. I am in the process of sending a letter to Mr. Callahan right now. The serial number is 1760**. What I found would make this a 1917 model 1907. How can I contact Mr. Brower?

Yep, it's a 1907 Issue 1907-1917 Modification 1, one of the last ones built in that variation because they only went to serial number 176300.

Let me know what JC has to say about the gun, very curious to know if those grips came with it or not.

Can you expand on what that means?

All it means is that the gun was modified to make it another variation.

The modification they did to it in that variation was very minor, all they did was stop putting the engraved "Savage" marking on the side of the frame.

Well if it is factory nickled it will show in the letter, it should also say whether or not those grips are factory, they'll come up as special order as well.

How are the grips supposed to be attached. It looks aas though these grips were glued on, but now they are loose. Were the regular factory grips glued on also?

I don't think they were ever glued, just friction fit. You usually find alot of broken grips on the old pistols because they were mainly made of plastic except for the real early models which had metal grips.
