Ok I purchased the savage a week ago. My local gun store says it's ok to shoot 7.62 out of it. I called savage and they said no only the bull barrel models.
So which is it? I have I'm confused

Yes you can, it just not warranted if they know about it. Just like shooting reloads.

Thanks for the info. They sold me 2 boxes and of course you can't return ammo.

I shoot both a bolt action Savage 308 and an M1A1(M14) It is the M1A1 that is much more sensitive to chamber pressure and bullet/powder combinations. You can actually bend an operating rod or trash a bolt shooting some commercial ammunition in the M1A1.

Some of the non commercial stuff was meant to be shot out of heavy machine guns and the stuff is hot. What brand do you have?

I think you'll be fine with the 7.62 ammo.

7.62x51 NATO is typically loaded to lower pressures than .308 Winchester.
It shouldn't be a problem.
On the other hand .223 Remington and .556 NATO is just the opposite.
