I am trying to figure what cailber would be the best for what I am looking for. I want to be able to shoot 55 grain bullets at 3800fps or faster. I had a 220 Swift that I absolutly loved. It would push 55 grain Noslers at 3825fps.

So what would y'all reccommend? 220 Swift...22-250AI...243...6mm something...ect...ect..???

A 243AI would do it or just a 243Win should even be close,The barrel length would be the determining factor.

yea thats the problem cause I wanna go with a shorter medium heavy barrel like the Savage Predator.
22 incher. approx.

Short barrels prolly ain't gonna do it.....

With 24" or more these should do it.......several 22 & 6mm wildcats. 2 factory rounds that'll do it in 6mm.......that I can think of right now.

243 & 6mm Remmy.

Well then forget about speed. Which one will throw a 55 grainer the fastest threw a 22" barrel?

The 6mm will do it with a 22" I have a bdl sporter that does 3850 with 55gr nosler and a grain under max of win 760

If you're looking for a factory round.......6mm Remmy or the 243. If you're gonna save pelts, any of the fast 22's.

One other that isn't on the list, one that I've been looking at lately.........250 Savage AI with 75grn bullets.....and it would give pretty good performance from a short barrel too, hard on fur though.

My vote goes to the 6mm Remington. Sinman made a 23" #3 contour barrel for me with my reamer...I wanted a 12 twist to shoot the lighter stuff.

First test with H4350 yielded a tad over 3,800 with 70g Noslers!

Lots of talk about speed here with the but zero on accuracy with these light pills. Not a lot of 6mm's are real accurate with this light of bullet. Speed is useless at 300yds if your groups are not going to support the intended purpose.

In my opinion, since you stated 55gr bullets, I'd stick with the 220 Swift, or the 22-250AI.

1:12 Twist 6mm Rem. 28" yields 3625 fps with 75 gr VMax. Tremendous accuracy. I have hit 5 eggs in a row at 300 yds on one luck day. I used to shoot the 55s in an older 6 Remmy. Give me the 70s and 75s anyday. The ballistic coefficient is just too much higher. Tim

Groups at 100 yds.

wondering why no one has mentioned a 22BR - would it not fit the bill for speed and throw the 55's well down a 22" barrel? Have no idea, which is why I ask (and yes think the 250AI would be nice or even a std 250)

Why do you want a short barrel?

I'v been thinking about adding a 22-250 AI barrel to the collection myself. 243 AI would work too. Either would be plenty fast and sub moa. Great splat factor too....Bill

Well said, speed is useless without accuracy.

Just because they are fast doesnt mean they are not accurate. ;)

Last year I built a .220 Swift on a Savage Target Action with a 3 grove 30" super match grade barrel from Pac-Nor that I love. The barrel is contoured almost exactly like the barrel on my F/TR .308, going from 1.117" large shank to 1" at the muzzle. Shooting a measly 34 grains of Varget I was getting average velocities of 3739 with 45 gr. Sierra 1310 bullets. I am currently shooting 37.4 grains of Varget with Sierra Match King 52 grain HPBT 1410s and getting over 3700 fps. I have no problem hitting pop cans filled with water at a lasered 500 yds (when the wind is descent) off my bench. I figure the extra velocity is coming from the long barrel and my fairly high altitude (2130). I just love the 220 Swift really. It's IMHO the perfect cartridge (and I have lots of them). They just look right and shoot great.
