After a really slow hunting season(for me anyway), things turned around quickly on New Years Day. My 10yo son did shoot his first deer this season, but I had 0 deer in the freezer and never even drew the bow or pulled the gun up on one. But on Jan1 my two cousins and I went out to put on some drives in a couple areas we hunt. Of course I was using my Savage 220f 20ga slug gun with the Leupold ultimateslam scope.
Well, 10minutes into our hunt I spot a doe at the edge of the woods about 75yds away, quartering to me. The deer had a broken leg and was limping badly. So I put the reticle on the front shoulder and BAM!....one deer down and im off the schnide! After getting up to the deer i find out it was actually a buck that had dropped its antlers a while ago and its leg looked like an old arrow hit off another property. By the looks of it it may not have made it thru winter so it was a good one do get on the ground.

If anyone is doubting the ability of a 20ga here is a picture for you. I am using 3" Federal Premiums with the Barnes Expander bullet, and I have not had a deer run more than 30 yds yet(most are DRT!). 75 yd heart shot. These 220f's shoot and feel just like shooting a rifle, and have tremendous knockdown power. It may well be the one firearm that i never sell!...

Onto the next drive. This drive was a small set of woods overlooking an open swamp area where I was setting up. As i approached my stand a doe made the huge mistake of jumping up about 10yds in front of me. It got to about 50 yds before i pulled the trigger, and just like that I had 2 deer down!

After that shot I finally got to my stand and was awaiting the drivers to come thru for about 10 minutes, when I hear a noise behind me. There goes another doe that must have been spooked by my other shot and may have seen me get in my stand. It stopped at the edge of the marsh for a split second before entering the open field, which ended up being a split second too long....LOL One more shot and I had 3 deer down!....

I did have a shot to get a 4th doe not long after that when one ran across in front of me about 150 yds out. I fired a shot at it and dang near got it, but shot a little low and I could see dirt fly up in between its front and rear legs( i believe the dirt actually hit the deer though...LOL). This was my first miss with this gun in 3 years of hunting with it, but it was a 150yd running shot, but hey, I was on a roll at that point so i figured Id try it.

So I rang in the new year with 3 deer down on my first 3 shots, and also donated the deer to a local needy family who was looking for a couple deer to put in their freezer.....a great day all the way around.

I read an article some years back where they compared 12ga to 20ga slug loads on deer and pigs, and hands down the 20ga outperformed the 12. They were hard pressed to explain why, but the results of some 10-12 animals taken with each, the penetration and expansion of the 20 was better.

Is the 220f a repeater?

2 in the mag 1 in the chamber. Not sure about Pdogs but mine is a pia to load the mag, you need one hand to hold the first shell down in order to slide the second over it. It does shoot like a rifle though, I had a 1" group at a 100 with copper solids(remington) but at $20 a box I need to find something else.
