I am looking to put a new scope on my 270 that will be used a target and hunting rifle. The two scopes that I'm looking at is a leupold vx-1 4-12x40 and a Nikon buck masters 4.5-14x40. I plan on shooting no more than 600 yards. If you have any input or like a different scope in the same price range please let me know.

I have the buckmaster 4.5-14 on both of my main deer hunting rifles. One of them just happens to be a .270. It is fantastic glass for the $$, and I would say is better than the vx1 in my opinion. Most everyone that handles my rifles and looks through the scope says, "man that is clear" or something similar. But, I don't think you can go wrong with either one.

Does it have a heavy barrel or just the factory hunting barrel...If your gonna use it for target, seems like it will heat up terrible and a real good scope will do you no good anyway...So I would stay with 4 to 12 which should be plenty unless your bulls eye shooting..Where is this case you would want more..

I had a 6-18x40 buck master on my .270.

Can't go wrong with Nikon glass.

It has a factory "sportster" barrel on it which doesn't heat up very fast with my style shooting. The rounds that I shoot are about $45 a box so I take my time shooting.

I have a P-223, and it is amazing that it has better light transmission (98%) than the Monarch (95%). It is because the P series has newer lenses and coatings than the much older Monarch series. Confirmed by Nikon!!!!

both scopes are well made and an excellent value for the dollar.
i have the 4.5x14 buckmaster and it's a really nice scope. the glass is very clear and Nikon has their ""spot on" ballistic technology program for use with your scope.

I've had about every scope mentioned here and they are all fine. I just purchased a Vortex DiamondBack 4-12 with the Dead hold BDC reticle. Fantastic scope for the $175-$200 price tag. It is very compact and has very nice glass, adjustments proved to be very precise. I'd buy the Vortex over both, I think the Vortex Glass and Warranty are superior to both other scopes. They even use a 270 as the test rifle in there test.

The buckmaster would be my choice over the VX-1 anyday. I give my customers the same speal, if you are gonna buy Leupold then get VX3 or higher. Any less than then go Nikon or Vortex and save some cash.
