I’m looking for a bit of advice here please. I have a Savage 12F in 6.5x284 and with a view to shortly swapping barrels I have purchased a Forster GO gauge. This is marked GO - 284 Win, 1.810. – Now the problem is that I have tried it in my rifle and the bolt won’t close on it. I have removed the extractor from the bolt head. It is a new rifle with a factory installed barrel and it shoots and chambers full length sized ammo with no problems.

According to Forsters interchangeability chart this looks like it should be the right gauge.

284 Win 284 Win, 22-284, 6mm-284, 25-284, 6.5-284, 270-284, 30-284, 35-284

Any ideas?

I have looked at prints and now I am scratching My head , becouse I ordered a set of 284 go and no go gages Myself, from the bottom of the 284 win to the shoulder is 2.275, and from the 6.5X284 it is 2.771 witch is +.004 to long and Your bolt would not close on the gage . I think We need to call Mfg of gages or mybe some one on the site has run into this before , Don't feel like You are the only on in this boat Dangerous Dan

According to Dave's list, gages for most everything on an unaltered 284 is interchangeable.

I think I remember reading somewhere that there is a slight difference between the 6.5-284 NORMA and 6.5-284 WIN. The NORMA is the now commercial standard and the WIN was the wildcat .284WIN necked down to 6.5mm.

Not all guages are exactly the same, but still in tolerance. Use a comparator to measure the guage and your ammo and see how much difference there is.

Thanks for the replys. I have emailed Forsters to see what they say but I sure glad that I tried the gauge before I removed the barrel or I would have had about 10 thou excess headspace and convinced I had got it right.

bringing back an old question, that doesn't seem to have an answer.

So can you use a 6.5x284WIN go gauge to set the head space on a 6.5x284NORMA???

If not, does anyone know where i can get a norma spec go gauge?

They are the same, use either one.
