.223 change

I am new to this switch barrel idea so sorry if this question comes across dumb. If i had a .223 what calibers could i switch it to with replaceing the barrel only not the bolt head or anything else? any short action?

A gun set up for .223 Rem has a .378" bolt face. Without changing the bolt head you could switch to another cartridge with .378" rim diameter. See the "what fits" info in the FAQ section:
