I got a few questions any help is appreciated

Also do you know anything about the ratmags? Some guy makes them they are 10 round mags for the axis.

Will 7.62x51 work in the savage axis? With ARs if its 5.56 it will shoot both but if its .223 it wont shoot 5.56.

If you get a 7.62x51 barrel threaded for savage, then sure.

7.62x51 is .308 - If it's military / NATO 7.62x51 I don't think it's a good idea. I have heard NATO & Mil 7.62x51 ammo work on higher pressures & not safe to use in a standard .308 barrel.
I'm sure some of the other guys will chime in on this. It's kinda sorta important....

wait, I thought it was reverse, 308s were higher pressure than mil 7.62x51

there are quite a few threads on 223 vs 5.56, the conclusion is "you read and reach your own", I have shot 5.56 in my savage.

You heard wrong. I strongly recommend to NOT shoot 5.56 in a .223 chambered firearm.

5.56 chambered firearm: can shoot either 5.56 or .223

.223 chambered firearm: ONLY .223.

Same goes with 7.62x51/.308.

Only shoot .308 in a .308 chambered firearm.

A 7.62x51 chamber can shoot both.

And it's not that they will function, but its that they both can SAFELY.

op, pls search thread here, we had everyone from Fred to my grandma chime in on the 223 vs 5.56 in a SAVAGE thread some months back.

as for 308 debate:
7.62mm NATO cartridge has a maximum chamber pressure of approximately 50,000 psi, in the SAAMI book the .308 Winchester has a MAP (maximum average product) pressure of approximately 62,000 psi.

saying that some 7.62 mil sup will not chamber in a 308.

Ok thanks guys! And i just noticed the .308 ammo is actually cheaper than 7.62 so im gonna just shoot .308 150 gr fmj for fun and for long range/accuracy whats good i heard 168 gr hornady is good.

Why not make it easy so you won't have to deal with this issue.

Get a different caliber..... (I shoulda been a comedian...)

I've heard from a few different forums where mil spec / milsurp ammo runs at higher pressures which is why it's got swaged primers, crimped bullets, laquer coatings, blah blah,....

Because of the diffrent specs laid out for mil ammo it's not recommended being used in a non-mil weapon. Of course, this is from reading about the issue. I've never had to deal with it ..... Yet.
If & when you do find out, perhaps you'd be so kind as to enlighten us? With recent events causing shortages in everything, it pays to know. I have a few thousand rounds of 7.62x39 for a SKS & AK which is clearly milsurp ammo. But the rifles were designed for hard use. Locating & procuring the ammo I just mentioned was no easy task. So I'm starting to think we'll all be settling for whatever we can get our mits on.
Anyway,I'd better get outta here. I hear bells.... I think Santa might be nearby....
Oh..... wait a minute. That's my tinitus acting up again.
Merry Christmas Y'all
Or-
as my grand daughter says: Merry Kiss Moose!
Stay safe guys.

If it will shoot 308, then it should be able to shoot the the 7.62 x 51--at least that's the case with every AR 10 I've seen and used. I don't know about the Russian steel cased stuff, and I would definitely stay away from the lacquer-coated stuff, as it has inconsistent sizing issues and in my experience both have misfired about 1 in 50 rounds.

On the other hand, I've used Prvi Partizan NATO 5.56 ammo for years through my AR's and have found it to perform excellently, good clean brass and never had a misfire. It does have a lacquer sealed primer, but that is for mil-spec requirements I believe and has not cause any fouling problems in my AR's. I find it is more accurate than any bulk domestic stuff like Federal or Remington and is just a hair under A max. It also comes in nice plastic-sealed battle packs in quantity.
