Just bought a 111 trophy hunter in .300 win mag. I've shot about 40 shots through it so far cleaning it every so often. My shots are all on the paper at 100yards and I'll have 2 or 3 group within an inch and then I'll have 2 or 3 a couple inches apart. These shots are all from prone with the gun resting on a bag. It has the Nikon scope it came with and after a few shots I noticed the rings were loose and after tightening them it didn't change anything. Should I look into some new mounts or rings. I'm already looking into a recoil pad to help me from flinching but the majority of these shots I felt good about

*tim*,
I too have the trophy hunter (XP) in 300 win mag. I am only at about 20 shots, but similar deal. Three shots just under inch in the center of the bull, followed by a cool down, next three shots measure 1+3/4", followed by a cool down, then the POI will shift 2" for the next three with a 1+1/2" group. I suspect the bedding, but could be scope/rings/bases. Savage advertises pillars, but there is a lot of room for movement and the 300WM has the whomp to shake things up. I have had much better POI consistency and significant group shrinkage after an action is on bedded pillars and nestled in Devcon steel putty.

Blessings, Bill

Try a quality scope on it.

I ended up changing my rails and rings out for some higher grade aluminum ones. There were no steel ones left in town. Has helped a lot

Tim,
Just a thought. You didn't say but did you shoot that 300 the entire 40 shots in one setting? Unless you are a very experienced shooter flinching could also have a lot to do with the problem. That 300 from the prone position will get to you pretty good.

I have a 300 and shoot it mostly from the prone position and mine gets to me and I have been shooting from that position since the 1950s

Regards, Keith
