Have a line on a cheap 110 in 30-06 I might pick up tomorrow.
Its a 30-06. I have plenty of 06's and trying to think of an interesting cartridge to re-barrel to.
280 might be my first option. What other interesting cartridges could one consider similar in size to the 06?

Can't have to many 06's. 25-06 27-06 28-06 338-06 or 35-06

You forgot the 32-06, might be my second choice.

Got a swift, but the 244 might be a good option on one.

Maybe a military cartridge??
Already have a 6.5 Carcano and a 8X52R Siamese Mauser

How about a 6.5-06?

Laying in bed thinking last night, 280 would be ok, but I have a 7 RM coming so that would be redundant for now. 8mm-06 sounds interesting but maybe souped up like an Ackley Improved. Is there a cartridge like that? 8mm-06 A.I.

6.5-06 would be a good option if I went smaller.
Thanks

Pretty much settled on a straight 8mm-06. Probably wait til my 300 H&H is all done to figure out what config changes I might want to make
Thanks

Had the same thoughts about what cal. Changed mine to the 35 Whelen. Used the A&B barrel from Midway. Glass bed with floating bbl. Timney trigger. Bell and Carlson stock. Larger bolt handle. Was very disapointed with accuracy on the first trip to the range. Took it home, used some JB paste in the barrel. To my delight, the more I shot it, the better it shot. Very pleased with the MOA shooter. This was my first time to attempt this bbl change. Choosing the 35 allowed me to use the bolt as it was. It shoots better than I can.

The neat thing is with a bolt head change you can rebarrel to anything like the 300wsm which has become very popular for hunting big game. The other fact is you can barrel to any shorter cartridge in the long action and be able to seat the bullets where you want for the most part and get even better accuracy. The sky is the limit.

Well I thought I had decided, but now leaning to 6.5-06. I think I'll finish up the 300 H&H and see how I like McGowen's Varmint barrel then order the 6.5 from them if I do.
The great thing about Savages is, they are so cheap you can just get another gun if you want different bolt head size. :)

.338/06 has some high BC bullets available and would be a "Hammer of Thor"! On the down side recoil would be stout, IMHO.

the 8MM-06 was a popular cartridge after the war. comeback Mauser's were plentifull and gunsmiths simply ran a 30-06 chamber reamer into them and, voila, an 8MM-06. Old reloading manuals had listings for it Ballistics were excellent and still are. Jim 36, I did the same in building my .35 Whelen with the A&B barrel and it is an MOA shooter with .200, 225 and 250gr. bullets. Now if I could just win a ticket in the moose lottery.

the A&B 35 whelen worked great for me also. 257AI and .244AI are my current favorites
anything on the o6 or o8 case trumps magnums for economy shooting. May not get the speed, but they work!

Personally, I'd go with a .338-06 or the 6.5-06.

In 8mm, I just get some surplus Mausers and be done with that ....... in fact I did .......

The .338-06 is actually about as comfortable with cast bullets as it is with jacketed as well.

The .35 Whelen would be the KING of cast however on an '06 case!!

Have fun deciding .......... if you get "dizzy" just slow down and then lean back into it!! (I know, I'm there permanently!!!)

Best regards

In the 50's and early '60s my uncle did quite a few of them using a pull through reamer.

He also did few 8 PMMs, the "Poor Mans Magnum" or the 8-338WM.
