Model 12 pawn shop find

I only just recently became aware of the Savage Model 12 and its awesome reputation - I used to shoot two or three times a week and always bought and sold a gun or two per year.

So I have been hiding my head in the sand as far as Savage's image and products in today's world....

But last week I was browsing local pawn shops looking for anything that I couldn't live without, and I spotted a used Savage Model 12 in .22/250. Asked 'em what they wanted and they said $349. Seemed like a decent price. The rifle looked a little rough cosmetically, but the bore looked good.

I decided I had to at least think about it overnight and I went home and wondered what I could dig up in trade to knock the price down a little bit. I had a Taurus .22 pistol which I inherited and had never shot. So I took that in the next day and asked if they wanted to do some tradin'. I was actually willing to have given them the Taurus and $200. The guy looked the Taurus over and scratched his chin for a moment and said he'd do the deal for $50 difference.

I could not turn it down for $50 out of pocket.

Have not shot it yet.

Curiously it appears to be a very early model - no accutrigger.

The pre-accutrigger rifles are very to upgrade with a good trigger, stock, etc, if you decide to go that route.

It probably has a flat rear receiver so if you change scope mounts make sure you get the right ones. And check the bore for copper.

It is a flat top - thanks for the heads up on that. Any idea on how to obtain and owner's manual?

Is the trigger on the early non-accutrigger models adjustable?

Sorry Gmac, don't know any MacDonalds. My grandmother was a MacInnes, born in Scotland. I am in southern New Hampshire, city of Nashua. I do know a lot with Scottish ancestry but no MacDonalds.

Orange Crush, yes the old 3 screw triggers can be adjusted to around 2.5 lbs. Look in the FAQ section for instructions.

I still haven't shot the rifle yet - but I have a question about possible customization of the rifle - more precisely, rebarreling to another caliber.

Would it be possible to rebarrel the rifle into a 6.5 Creedmoor? It is currently a .22/250. I have never done, or had done for me any such customization on a rifle.

You can easily change the barrel on your gun,call Jim Briggs at 1-763-682-4296.He is the guy to go to for barrels and most of the simple toools you will nedd including a go gage you can get at midway.

It looks to me that besides installing a new barrel in the 6.5 creedmoor, that the bolt would have to be swapped out or at least modified for the creedmoor case / anything else obvious that I missed?
