The last time the OP was active on Savage Shooters Forum was on 04-01-2013 at 08:24 AM.
I don't think you will hear from him again.

I'm not surprised. A lot of people comes, get their issues resolved and leave never to come back with the resolution and much less give back to the community that help them.

Well, he joined in 2011, total 64 posts, so minus the posts on this thread, he was at least a little active prior. Reading the first few posts on this thread, he seemed very appreciative of people- his friend who helped start him in a new career trajectory, etc. Maybe I'm doom and gloom, but I wonder if something serious happened to him health-wise. Fact is the only constant in life is death; we'll all taste it some day.

I enjoyed reading this thread and sincerely hope the best for him. And if he's gone from this world, then blessings to his family and loved ones he left behind.

He may be enjoying his new built for cheap rifle.

It's a bit of a let down to read this entire thread only to find out it died before the big moment. Sure wish he would follow up.

Maybe the program buried deep inside his computer "killed it" one month past the extended warranty date, like happened to mine last month?? :(

Neat thread. For something so sentimental, I'd have chosen wood stocks and blued barrels. I know they're not very "sniper" like, but wood and bluing just has so much more character. When a good old blued and walnut gun gets handed down through generations, it just adds so much more sentimental value. I know when I have a son, I'm going to encourage him to buy wood and blued guns (when practical).

There is zero sentimental value in a rifle for me if it makes me a slave to wiping it down every time the temperature or humidity changes. I try now to do stainless only, but if there is any carbon steel in it, it gets the cerakote treatment. With that process one can make it look how you want, but have reduced maintenance overhead.

I have twice this summer found the start of rust on my blued 1911 slide. I am now oiling it on a weekly basis. I don't want my assets to make me a slave, so that slide will be getting the cerakote treatment pretty soon too.

No! Don't do it! You need the brass rod dehumidifier and the sack of dehumidifying crystals in your safe. If you're talking about an everyday carry gun then yes, stainless is the way to go. If you're talking about a hunting rifle/shotgun you break out a few times a year, you just have to make sure it's cleaned and oiled after each use and it's fine.

I don't know where you live man, but here in the great northwest, Oregon to be precise, if it ain't stainless or sealed with cerakote, it's rusts, like right now. I frog lubed my entire Remington 870, took it to the trap range, it was muggy. 1 hour later my gun is rusted. There is no stopping it.

Remind me never to move to Oregon. I would cry if my 870 rusted up. Literally cry.

My 1911 is my EDC and sits in a car that might go from the 40's in fall to 80+ during the day then back to 40's by nightfall. Winter is even worse. Go from the heated house to the hunting blind and it is a drop from 70+ to something from -10 to 26F for several hours. Then back up to 50+ in the truck and then back to 70+ in the house. I have to wipe off all condensation and sometimes wait for the frost on it to thaw and then wipe off all the condensation.

Perhaps it will be better in CO where the air is drier due to the altitude, but at 900ft MSL the humidity/condensation/frost thing is killing me and I hate blued steel.

I live in the Willamette Valley in Oregon, just south of Salem, and I have a couple of 870's in the closet, my grandpa's 16 gage and my parkerized HD 870 in 12- not to mention my other assorted carbon steel closet dwellers (yes I need a safe) but I don't have an issue with rust, not yet knock on wood

You are one of the lucky ones... My 870 is parkerized too, it's the worst rusting gun I have ever owned. And I have had two of them, and both were like that.

I have a safe now with a desiccant can. It's pretty nice to have dry storage for all my children. But like I said, take my shotgun to the trap range and it rusts in an hour. Have to bring it back and wipe the whole thing down. I can't wait to swap the barrel on my savage to a stainless... Stupid Oregon weather.

Well I feel like a jerk! Sorry guys, I have not been on this site in quite some time.

Long story short the big day came back about a month ago. He had been pretty busy up until then and I didn't want to throw a wrench in things with a huge distraction.

He ultimately chose the McGowan. Once we got to the range and he got it sighted in, I was able to get 2 rounds just slightly over lapping at 100 yards which is extremely good for me. His shooting was about the same as well. The rifle definitely likes 175 SMK's as I had hoped. Because i'm definitely no expert shooter, and it has been quite some time since he last fired a rifle anything like this, I strongly feel that it'll shoot much tighter than either of us were able to accomplish that day.

The Shilen on the other hand, I unfortunately have not sighted in yet. The day we went to the range I made it about him and kept him pretty busy between the McGowan and my AR-15. Since then I have just been waiting for a low to no wind day while not working to go and get it sighted in properly. I could do it whenever, but I would rather not try to get a good zero while fighting windy conditions.

To anyone considering electronic ear muffs, I can definitely recommend the ones that I went with for this project. You definitely still hear a report with them, but it really isn't all that loud either. And once you've heard a shot from a .308 without them, the difference is pretty substantial. If you are someone with a good amount of hearing loss as my friend, they really are worth every penny. With the amplification they also provide for non-damaging sounds, he was able to hear me talking in a very low whisper from ~10 feet away. He could even hear his feet crunching in the grass at the range. It has been years since he could hear sounds like either of those. So again, they really are worth every penny, for multiple reasons.

To all of you, thank you so much for your support and continued interest. Although in a way it's ongoing as I haven't been able to zero the Shilen yet, this has been a project that has absolutely been worth every last penny.

Yessss!!
Now then, we have been waiting for this!

Hope he continues to love it.. I wear the Ear Muffs too and it makes me feel almost "Normal" again as I have hearing damage also.. (Some my own doing and some was unavoidable) and I love them.

Thanks for the update!

A very much needed post!

Nice to see that you didn't get all tornado'd up or something :) Good to see that you didn't go missing. Search parties were staring to amass.

When you get time post some pics as everyone loves gun porn.

To be honest there really isn't much left to this thread. The ONLY thing not done is sighting in the Shilen. Hunting season maybe?
