223 with 1 in 9 twist ?

Probably been kicked around on here several time,but am going to
ask anyway....What is the heaviest bullet you guys have found
that works good in the 223 and with the 1 in 9 twist...

I thought of getting a 1 in 8 twist,but Jim Briggs told me that
the 1 in 9 will be about all I would need..This is going to be
a rifle for the grand daughter to shoot 250 yard F class with..

Thanks for any information or advice you have to offer,so I
can make sure to get a few box's of bullets on hand...

75 gr. Sierra Match King HPBT work great with Varget in mine.

Same with 69's,

and 55's,

and 50's...

Also to save you some time, 24.0 gr. of Varget seems to be the sweetspot for 69's and 75's.

Yup...75gr HPBT and 24.0gr Varget. Try OALs between 2.25 and the lands, I suspect 2.28-2.30" will work great.

The ability to shoot the Berger VLD's is not to be discounted and for that you will need the 8 or 7 twist barrel. Does the wind blow where you live ? If so, you/she will want to shoot the highest BC bullets you can, or the wind will be killing you compared to anyone else who is using a high BC bullet. The factory barrels are in fact 1:9.25 if I recall and any of the custom barrels should be of higher quality (Shilen, McGowan, Lilja etc). If you decide to go the factory route, I have had a lot of success shooting the superformance 75gr HPBT ammo. I only use it for hunting, so I don't use much of it, since one cannot get the exact powder to duplicate the load.

Today, shooting my 243 Win, the 95gr SST superformance ammo was impacting 3" higher than the PPU 100gr loads, so I imagine it must have a substantial velocity difference

Ace we have been over this one a couple times and Jim is correct for 250 yard shooting you definitely do NOT need a 1:7 twist or even a 1:8 as 200 to 250 yards is when most high B.C. bullets start to settle down. You only need to find the right bullet combo your barrel will like.69 grain to 75 grain is plenty to get to 250 yards. 900 yards may be a different storybut for 250 1:9 is good.

69 grainers with 26 Gr Varget fly through the same ragged hole in my 8" twist. 55 grainers do the same with the same load.

Savage/Stevens manual for the .223 recommends 62gr Sierra Matchking which is abot halfway beyween 55gr and 69gr. I think the 1:9 will shoot anything well. Mine does but I have nowhere to shoot over 200yds..

I had a 12Bvss that shot 80 smks very well. (should have kept that one). I currently have a 112Bvss that shoots the 80's well also, with a factory 1 in 9 barrel. It won't hurt to try it. That being said, if you're going to buy a barrel anyway, go with the 8 twist. It will still shoot the lighter bullets, and will be better for the 80's WHEN your grand daughter wants to start shooting farther. :)

barrel ordered from J Briggs in 1/9 twist will have to see how it goes but have lots of work
to do on it first..New stock coming,recoli lug and barrel nut...Will replace the trigger as well.
Might have it all done sometime after christmas...

That chart is interesting. When I sent my 308 off to be tested they used Hornady TAP 168g. Guess they don't follow their own recommendations....

69smk and H4895 cci-400 primed lc-10 works really good in my 10&12's out to 300 yards as that's as far as the range i have access to goes

69 SMK, Reloder 15, Rem 7 1/2, Rem brass is magic in my predator hunter
