One of my favorites is 42.0 of RE15 with a 168 gr hornady match bullet. You have to drop your charge some and work up to 42.0 grains as that may be too hot for your gun.

I think it is the sierra accuracy load. Which reloading manuals do you have.

Are the 5R barrels smoother than the normal Savage barrels?

42.0 g RE-15 with the 168 g SMK is a fairly mild load and also typically very accurate in a .308. With Federal brass it is the Sierra "accuracy" load that is meant to mimic the ballistics of the Federal GMM factory ammo. You can also substitute 39.5 g IMR 3031 and get similar velocity and accuracy in many rifles.

There really are all kinds of ways to make a Savage .308 shoot well. I would try these 4 bullets: 168 g SMK, 168 g A-Max, 175 SMK, 178 A-Max. Work with the recommended powder charges in the Hornady and Sierra manuals.
