How to tell if i have center feed or staggerfeed without removing the action

I am certain this has been discussed at length somewhere in this forum, but I can't find my answer using the search function. I did see how to tell the difference by taking the action out of the stock, but since it's in the middle of hunting season right now that ain't gonna happen. I am wanting to place an order for a McMillan A5, so I believe I will need this information. Is there any way to tell what I have without removing the action and risking loosing my zero? Thanks in advance.

Measure the front two action screws. 4.275" would be a stagger feed, 4.400" would be a center feed. Just over 5" would be a long action.

Stagger and centerfeed long actions the same action screw spacing, I think-
What I do is open the bolt and look at the mag- centerfeed mag "lips" are spaced close enough together where a round has to be shoved in between them- in other words, if you were to load some rounds in there, they would stack one directly on top of another, feeding single- file. A stagger feed holds them staggered, sort of side- by- side almost but not quite.

that was going to be my suggestion. load it up and see if they are inline or staggered.

Both mags stack the cartridges alternaly below the top round. Centerfeed feeds from the center. Staggerfeed feeds from 1 side then the other side.
The opening at the top is smaller on the centerfeed and can be a pain to load till you get used to it. Staggeredfeed are easy to load.

So my mag has to be loaded by sliding one round front to back (if that makes sense). It sounds like (from the above descriptions) that the staggerfeed can just have the rounds pressed into the mag like loading a PMAG on an AR. Am I correct on this?

you press the centerfeed in straight. The lips are tight (no comments) and you have to push them in.

You can do it that way, CRNA, or you can just put the cartridge on the feed lips and push straight down and it will pop right in - no sliding. Your choice.

If the top of the receiver to the rear of the ejection port is rounded, it is commonly called a "round back" action.
Conversely, if the top of the receiver to the rear of the ejection port is flat, not rounded, it is commonly called a "flat back" action.

Your wife is gonna be pissed when she sees what you did with her ponytail holder she's been looking for, lol. Good idea though, I use them to hold the two pieces of my fishing poles together when I break them down, they don't deteriorate like rubber bands. I'll even throw a little Christmas tip your way, Walmart sells them in a 100 pack for around $5. They make a great stocking stuffer and she will never notice when you need a couple, lol.
