Lil Dog(10yo) and i went out for Pa's opening day of firearm(shotgun) season yesterday(been out with him in archery but never had a good enough shot for him to take).
We sat a few hours in the stand in the Am and saw nothing at all, so we figured we'd come out for lunch and get back in early in the afternoon. We got back to the stand around 2pm and saw deer 5 minutes after getting settled in. We saw a couple doe running around at about 150yds, then saw a small buck at about 85 yds. We watched the buck for about 30 minutes but could not get him talked into coming any closer, and eventually he walked off with the doe.
At around 4:30 one of the doe came walking thru at 70yds and he wanted to shoot it, so away he went. The shot ended up hitting a small tree branch that we couldnt see and the deer ran off. So I told him to sit back down and see what happens, and all of a sudden he sees another deer, not 2 minutes after his first shot and it was the little buck. This buck was not worried at all about the gunshot, instead he was head to the ground and tracking the doe. So away he goes again, only this time he connects on a perfect quartering toward us heart/lung shot at 65yds and the buck drops in its tracks!
I would love to say he was shooting a Savage but he was not cause mine is too muzzle heavy for him. Instead he shot using his Rossi single shot 20ga with a beaded sight. It was an awesome moment for him and I both, one that neither of us will ever forget! He still wants to shoot a doe with his bow, and it wont be long before he will be making prarie dog trips to Wyoming....LOL
