I own a Stevens 200 with the 4.4" screw spacing and have the opportunity to buy a like new McMillan stock for a very good price, however, it has the 4.25" screw spacing. Is there anything I can do with this stock to make it work with my action (modifications, etc) or is my only option to try to find a staggerfeed action for it? Thanks

You can fill in the front screw hole with a good epoxy let it harden then drill it out set in a pillar(same way) make some minor adjustments for your mag to fit(a few small shims) and you should be good to go.

This^. The pillar will allow for a little fudgeroom.

what if I were to have the stock inletted for a CDI detachable magazine system (4.4"). Would that make the modification any easier or would it not make a difference? If I sent it back to McMillan, would it be something they could handle or is a local gunsmith adequate?

You still have to move the front screw about 1/8th of an inch forward. By the time you sent it out and paid for the inletting and the moving of the screw you may as well buy a new stock that is made for what you have or want.
