I'm looking to build up a 7.62x39 on a Savage SA. I know I need a new "PPC" bolt head, but besides that, who would rechamber a Savage factory .308 barrel for me to 7.32x39? Not real worried about the .308 vs .311 issue, or the twist rate. This will be for fun/plinking to shoot a bunch of surplus stuff we have stocked up. If anyone has had this done, give me a rough estimate of cost I might be looking at.

thanks!

Ive done it more than a few times . Its easier to start with a new barrel, you need to cut all but the neck off a rethread the barrel , which may or may not work ,it depends on barrel contour. Green mountain has mil-surp 308&310 barrel blanks for about $50. Then chamber, thread ,contour . Cheaper to buy another gun.

dang, that's not what I was looking for. What do you think a smith would charge to work over one of those blanks?

I have used these , in 7.62x54r , 303, 30-06 , they function , be careful when using steel cases as sometimes the insert is extracted with a fired shell and if your not watching and chamber another round well it may or may not fire. Hopefully it will not fire ,just click then you can start looking on the ground for the adapter.
They are great as a survival tool.

That is exactly what I'm looking for! I guess I would still need the modified bolt head to extract correctly?

7.62x39 uses .310-.311 bullets. Is it safe to shoot these in a .308 barrel?

I have shot .310 bullets safely through my Savage Scout in 7.62.39 (with a .308 diameter barrel)
Your mileage may vary.
