Going to try and do some yote calling during christmas. I was wondering if there was any fur friendly .308 ammo for coyotes or should I stick with my .22-250? If I go with the 250 what are some ammo recommendations?

My dad controls the 'yotes on his property with his .22-250 loaded with 55gr pointed soft points. He loads his own 35.5 grains of IMR 4895 with the 55gr PSP. Pin point entry hole and a nickle size exit hole. Remington factory loaded 55gr PSP works just as good.

There is no such thing as "fur friendly" ammo in a .30 cal. If you care about the pelts, small caliber is the only way to go.

You should see what a 160gn Partition from a 7 WSM will do to them. :D

I kinda figured the .30 caliber was out of the question.

FMJ's will do the least damage. It's still a lot of power for a coyote.

I have seem them shot with a .308 and .30-06 and it stops 'em DRT, but knocks a pretty decent hole going out the other side. I agree with r3dn3ck, a FMT is your best bet if you insist on using a .308.

you could always slow the FMJ's with a reduced load to lessen the hydro static shock, or try a cast bullet at a modest velocity.

The bullet will still tumble and tear them up pretty good. Hydrostatic shock isn't the problem, a big bullet going through them is. Fur hunters usually use .20 or .17 cals these days with highly frangible bullets that make a tiny hole going in and don't exit.

I've taken at lot of yotes with my .308 using FMJ surplus ammo. I've only destroyed one pelt. I hit it in the bone of the rear leg when it was running away. It nearly took the leg off. All the other times, with a good shot to the vitals, 2 small holes and they dropped like a rock. But I did recently get a .223 because I like the lighter recoil and the ammo's a little cheaper. If the wind is blowing I'll bring the .308 though.

Same load that I use . It Works.
