I got tired of the .270...
The 7mm-08 barrel mystery (whiteish haze in the lands) was never solved...
My 25-06 can still punch one hole / 7 round groups with 85gr Noslers..
Still tinkering with the .243....- One hole / 5 rounds up to 70gr Noslers. Haven't tried the 90's yet.
And my new favorite - .223wssm is a blast. It likes anything I put in it. For a little bullet it sure makes one heckuva splash downrange.

I just happened to have a brand new .308 win. barrel & a whole bunch of brass & bullets soooooo.....

What do y'all like for a propellant in the .308? I have most anything & everything from 3031 to 7828, RL-15 - RL-25, I think I saw some 4831 in there, too.

What are you guys using for accuracy? I'm not concerned with achieving sub-light speed. Anything under mach 3 will be fine. Accuracy takes precedent.

Thanks in advance.

(No, I don't have any Varget..... Never cared much for it.)

Frank i just reload some 308 for a mauser 98 i sunk alot of $ in it seems to like 42grn rl15 federal 210 primer sierra 168BTHP Match. i also had pretty good results with 44.5 grains varget but not as consistant as the rl15. Good luck John

I was hoping someone was going to say RL-15.

Especially since I just picked up a couple pounds. I've grown to like the Alliant / Reloder products.

I think that'll be a good place to start with the 168gr Hornady HPBT's I have.

Thanks.

When I use RL15 I use the same load data as Varget it works flawlessly every time.

Varget.

You really need some! But if you have RL15 that is pretty darn good. RL15 may not be as temp stable as varget but being in Florida you may have more stable temps than we do here in the mountains.

i have also had good results with both rl15 and varget. made me happy when i found a powder that gave good results in both 223 and 308.

Glad to hear that you like the 223WSSM. In hind sight I should have kept that, but it mimicked my 243AI with 55-58gr bullets so much I had to let it go, but I am glad it found its way to a good home where it is appreciated.

For 308 all I run is Varget. My 12FV shoots 1 ragged hole with Varget and the 155 A-Max. I have used RL15 as a substitute for Varget in the 22-250 and 243 and loaded some 308s for a friend (and put RL15 in the 223WSSM rounds come to think of it), and the RL15 gave good performance in all of those, but I noticed in the 22-250 that the RL15 seemed to be much more finicky and touchy with very small changes in charge weights. I too like the Alliant Powders as I have had good luck with RL15 and 19 in 243, RL15 in 223WSSM and 223, RL19 in 30-06, and so far RL22 shows great promise in my 7mm Rem Mag.

I guess in the end Alliant has treated me well, but Varget is my go to powder for 308, but RL15 would most likely be my 2nd choice to try if I ever found the need. Sorry for all the rambling.

Yo Boots!
You should be glad you got rid of that 223 wssm. You would have never been happy with it. It's got a name with too many letters..... The barrel is too fat for that little hole in the end, people see those short, fat cartidges & laugh....

You'd have been miserable with it. Count your blessings you dumped it. It's a terrible choice in shooting & gunnage.... (gunnage?)..

You don't happen to have anymore, do you?

All kidding aside for a moment, it's been a real scream to play with. If the powder or charge is on the accuracy node or on the scatter node you can't tell the difference. It won't shoot anything wider than .75 at 100yds.
I recently tried 4320 in my .243 & the .223wssm & both do great with it. Prior to that, 4064 & 4350 were doing great. It's been alot of fun to work with.
The brass does take a little getting used to. It's really thick from the case head to the neck. It's a little tricky to anneal & uses alot more gas & heat than any other brass I've tried but, I believe annealing is the secret to making this cartidge happy. Without annealing the brass I was getting alot of soot blowback around the case. I'd have to clean the chamber after every 2 shots. The consistancy of the shots settled down alot after annealing the brass, too.
I'll keep you posted on the antics of the 223wssm as I progress with it.
Anyway, every time I ask for guys to recommend a powder I always get a few that live by Varget. then, I run into a few that absolutely HATE it. I guess I'll need to invest 30 bucks for a can & do my own evaluation. It might just be what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the input guys.... I've already got 3 set for OCW this morning. 125gr Nos BT, 150gr Nos bt & 168 Hornady hpbt Match. All ready to go with RL15 except for the 150's which I wanted to try a little 4064.

Thanks again.... I'll let y'all know how it does.
