Hi Guys,
I picked up a new unfired Axis in .308. The gun's getting trigger work done right now and a Leupold Vari X II put on it. It's a backup rifle for my Savage 110 based .300 RUM w/ Zeiss glass. I don't have the time to reload or experiment a whole lot. What are you all having the best luck with for groupings using factory ammo. I'm not concerned for any distance further than 300meters....lots of thick woods up here :) I was gonna start with some good 168grain stuff I have had "very good" experience with from work.
Any other ideas/experiences, I'm all ears. Thanks for the help,
Joe

The term "best" can mean lots of things to lots of people. Take a look at Sierra's 168gr bullets in any factory loading. BH makes some very good ammo, but it's just one of many companies offering good 308 factory ammo. Federal Gold Medal Match is the standard if you are talking factory load.
I personally like 175gr/178gr ammunition if you are going to be shooting further than 600 yards.

HSM ammo works great in my Savages, Hunting Shack Ammo, don't let the orange boxes scare you. I will send pictures of my targets. I also keep a case around for my AR10. Available at Sniper Central or straight from The Hunting Shack. I also shoot Federal Gold Medal Match ammo with Nossler Balistic's Tips, some of the best IMO, but it's twice as expensive.

Thanks guys. I had Sierra 168s in mind, but I think I have easy access to Federal Gold Match as well. I will compare them and see what I can shoot the tightest with.

I just can't see myself ever not reloading anymore...
And buying factory ammo is unheard of.

If it is gonna be used for hunting DO NOT USE FED MATCH. They are not hunting bullets , will not expand .
No brag , just fact

Federal power shock grouped sub-moa in mine before I started reloading. Remington didnt group worth a darn, but it was a good source of cheap brass......

No brag , just factGary is spot-on--big difference between best for paper and best for hunting.
