Springfield 840

Hello to all. Just found this site and wondered if anyone likes the Savage 340 as much as me? Currently own two in great shape. One is a 30-30 and the other is a .222 Remington. Both are the Springfield 840 model and shoot very well. Am going to own all calibers one day in this model if the Good Lord wills.

I'm in process of developing and chronographing a great shooting load for my .222. Will try Hornady 50 and 55 gr V-Max and some Speer 52gr Match over different powders such as Varget, H-322, and H-335. Will post results when weather lets up and am able to get off work to make it happen.

How many more calibers were offered in them? I thought all there was left was the .225?

Been looking for a 222 340 for a long time myself, got a Boone scope set up I wanna put on one.

If I understand correctly, they were offered in 22 Hornet, .222 Rem, .223 Rem, .225 Win, and .30-30 Win, with the Hornet and .225 bringing a little more money. Still, they should be affordable, and I found my .222 a couple years back at a pawn shop for around 230 out the door. The Springfield version are the ones I'll be after.

Got to the range this morning with my .222 and found a promising load. 40 rounds total, 5 shots each different charges and ran them all on the chronograph.

52gr Speer BTHP Match and H-322 powder
22.2 Charge average velocity of 3070 fps with extreme spread of 42 fps.
Honest 1" group with this old cheap Springfield.
Gonna load 10 more rounds with this exact combo and see how it operates. If the results from 10 shots are this good I will stop here with this one. Might play with .1 + or - powder and seating depth of bullet but doubtful if this will tighten anything up?

As a note, four groups were all over the place, with three groups around an inch and a half to two inches, and the one good inch group.
