I am starting to reload. I'm a total novice. I have a FCP-K .300wm. My plan is to find one round that shoots really well, and stick with it. The package I received from Savage recommended 165gr. Hornady SST's. How do they come up with that choice? If any one has a pet load that they are willing to share it would be appreciated.

What twist is your barrel?

My Savage competition rifle in 300 WM prefers 180 gr Nosler BT's or 208 gr AMax. H4831/H4831 SC, Retumbo, or H1000 are my "go to" powders.

Keeps the groups at 10" at 1000 yards. The 208's buck the wind better than the 180's, but with no wind, either are accurate.

Of note, heavy bullets equal a bit more recoil....so...buy a GOOD recoil pad or suffer accordingly.

The twist is 1 to 10", The gun is stock, but it came with a break and a squishy recoil pad. Another item of note, is the barrel is only 24", does this restrict bullet performance?

my 308 30-06 and 300 mag all like the 168 hornady's sst's and Amax & Vmax's
they are all good choices.

What are you going to use the rifle for?

My plan is to use this as a 1000 yard gun. Mostly for paper punching, but I would like to be able to hunt with it as well. I am by no means ready to take a 1000 yard shot at paper let alone an animal. I'm just getting started. I would like a bullet that will perform well for long range target and hunting.
