How can I convert Mills to MOA? Isn't 1 mill = 3.? moa?

MOA and Mils (short for milliradian) are different ways of measuring an angle.

There are 360 degrees in a circle
there are 60 minutes per degree.
therefore there are 21600 minutes of angle per circle.

There are 2Pi radians in a circle.
there are 1000 milliradians in a radian.
therefore there are approximately 6283.185307179586476925286766559 milliradians in a circle

1 minute of angle = 0.29088820866572159615394846141477216 milliradians
1 milliradian=3.4377467707849392526078892888463 minutes of angle

Circumference of a circle is pi x diameter. Diameter is twice the radius. You've got it doubled, one Mil is 3.43... MOA.

KRP: Thanks for pointing that out.
Yup...you are right...Brain fart here...
That's what happens when I do the math after a football game and several beers.

Radius and diameter don't matter, but you are right that there are 2Pi radians in a complete circle.

I will change my original post to reflect that.

Sorry if I misled anyone...should have double checked first.
(How embarrassing!)

It may be easier than you think? If your scope is calibrated to mill at 10x but the scope has a max power of 18x your there. For instants the old IOR scopes where ½mill hashes at 10x but if you turn the power ring to 18x the ½mill hashes in the MP-8 reticle are now MOA hashes

Realize that the military rounds to 6400 mils in a circle as the NATO standard.

Realize that the military rounds to 6400 mils in a circle as the NATO standard.Hmmm...I knew that...but I had forgotten.

Thanks for reminding us.
(Attention to Detail!)

It's still close, and since any scope adjustment is approximate, the important thing is to figure out what the intervals are with ~your~ getup, right?

Not sure if this will help?
1 mil = 3.???? Of a inch
.01 Mils or 1 click =.3??? Of a inch

10 clicks to a Mil

Little bit more than 1/4" per click at 100 yards

More like 3/8" at a 100 yards

Hope this helps not 100% correct but close???
I hope

Look up mil dot master.
There used to be a tutorial on it and they have a slide rule that does it for you, also have a downloadable program for animated practice.

There are a few good articles in the library concerning mil-dots. The links are on the homepage.
