I purchased the rifle as new however it has a scratch that is deep enough to expose the base wood which is maple. Scratch is about 4 inches long and is light on one end extending to a gouge on the other end. Located on the comb of the stock. Would appreciate ideas and reccomendations from others that have the knowledge to repair this , without too much of a mis-match to the surrounding finish. Thanks

We need more info. Is this wood stained a dark color? Like walnut? Try this; take a wet cloth and put it over the scratch. Take a soldering iron and heat the area of the scratch. This will swell the wood back to it original surface. Don't let the soldering iron scorch the wood. Just enough to make steam from the water in the cloth. Once the gouge has swelled it will have to be sanded and stain applied. That is the sticky part. What stain to match the color of the finish on the stock. Is the stock done with a synthetic finish like polyurethane or is it oil? You will have to match it as well. You can use water base stains or an oil base, your choice, again, matching the color is the tricky part.
