Savage Model 99E-dates of production help...

I was hoping somone might be able to help me with the date of production for a Savage Model 99 E in a 308.

The serial number is B638889.

Can't give you a specific date, but the B prefix tells me it's likely going to be sometime in the mid-late 1970's. Savage started using the letter prefix in 1968 when the National Firearms Act of 1968 went into effect as a way to distinguish those guns made after the law from before the law, and they went in alphabetical sequence. They're only up to the letter G on the guns they're making today.
