I just got a 300 short mag and want to load some bullets for whitetail and black bear.
Anyone have any recommendations on bullet and weight? Thinking 165-180gr. Maybe accusing or partition.

Also any good powders to start with. I have nosler, hornady, Barnes, and Berger(hopefully ships soon) books. So any of those bullets would be nice but not necessary.

Thanks.

Can't help you on the powder, but bullets I have some thoughts.
The WSM and WM are in the same velocity class, these thoughts are based on experienced WM results.

Alot of the "older" tech bullets, are built for slower velocity cartridges, like the '06 or 308.
On Mule deer over here, lighter than 165 TEND to be VERY destructive, and even if you hit anything but lungs; will destroy a lot of meat. So stick with a tougher bullet, or DON'T take anything but the easy shots.

I developed a load for a friends 300 short a month or so ago and it loved Ramshot hunter. I was using the 168 hornady Amax and it was printing half inch groups at 100 yards. Can't remember the charge weight off the top of my head but it was running right at 2950 through the chrony.

I load for my hunting partners 300WSM. It loves the Berger 175gr VLD and Ramshot Hunter He is getting about 2850fps, and easily sub-MOA groups. This rifle and load has killed a LOT of game.

I use 180 grain Swift Scirocco bullets with Reloader 19 in mine at about 3100 FPS if I remember right. Fast and consistent, good BC. Great for big stuff and wont blow up on smaller stuff. A great bullet for a great caliber.

I shoot both 165 AB and 180 Sierra SPBT sub MOA. The 165 AB are over 60 grs of RL-15 at 3070 fps. And the 180 is over 68.5 grs of RL-19 at 3003 fps.
Good luck and good shooting...

I have very good luck with the Barnes TSX 165gr with IMR4350. Very accurate and lethal load.
