Rechamber 7-08 to 284 Win

I've always wanted a 284 Win and I'm thinking about rechambering the Stevens 200 in 7-08 that I've got sitting in the safe. I know I would not be gaining much, but wondering if it's possible. Any other problems I might encounter besides having to tweak the centerfeed magazine?

Same boltface diameter as the .308/7-08. Just swap out the barrel.
I'm putting a new match 7-08 barrel on mine tomorrow...
I have read that there can be mag length issues with heavier bullets using the .284 in a short action- others might chime in if there's truth to that...

You might consider shipping your 7-08 barrel to a smith and having them punch it out to 284...or doing a little due dilligence on the chambers a given prefit comes with. Some 284 prefits have long throats that won't work too well at short action OALs. A Savage SA centerfeed mag is 3.00" long, so you can get a reamer that puts a 162 A-Max or 175 SMK at ~2.95" OAL and still work in your mag.

Thanks for the responses. To clear up a couple of things, I know that I can rebarrel it to a 284 Win, I'm just asking what the disadvantages are of rechambering the existing barrel to 284. Will it likely be as accurate as the barrel is now or are these rechamber jobs usually detrimental to accuracy? I'm just looking for a compact lightweight hunting rig, not a target rifle which is why I'm thinking it may be a waste of money to spend $300 on a barrel when I could just get the existing barrel rechambered.

As long as a compitent smith does the job you should not lose the accuracy.The key is setting up properly and keeping everything centered.
Boils down to $75-100 for chambering or $300-400 for new barrel.

You admitted you wouldn't be gaining much- which you won't (100-200 fps probably), so why do you want to go to the trouble, with a rifle that you already described as accurate?
The 7-08 is not only a very capable hunting round, it's capable of reaching out there with high BC bullets as well.
