Are berger bullets really that much better ???????

Ace, just for kicks I'd try seating 3 at 5-thousands, then 3 at ten-thou, then 3 at 20-thou, and just for kicks, another 3 at twenty-thou. You may want to try Varget if you have some.

FWIW....in my new Savage carbine in .223 with a 1-9 twist, I'm getting fantastic groups using Varget and Hornady 68gr. Match bullets. I have been seating these at just SAMI OAL. I've been busting groundhogs with 'em. One shot and they don't know what has hit 'em.

i swapped to bergers in my 6.5 creedmoor and had about the same groups until i read about seating them out from the lands and found the sweet spot being .120 off the lands now i'm holding 1/2 moa or better @ 300 yds.

Dave-I always seem to get the best accuracy when seating bullets the length the manuals
say..And others say they need em into the lands.Maybe it alldepends on the chamber....

And yes I have some Varget on hand.A so called friend of mine gave me some 414 to try..

VLDs tend to like a jam...the 73gr HPBT is designed to be mag length (ie. jump) friendly much like the 69/77 SMK.

760/414 really worked well for my 22-250 FWIW.

i went to bergers in my 6.5CM this year after having problems with certain lots of hornadys amax heads i found the sweet spot to be .110 off the lands not touching like most would think i save the bergers for when i'm shooting an across the course match (100,200,300,400,then anywhere from 500 to 1000 yds). after next months match its the off season for me until feb. and i plan on trying some smk's becuase of the cost . are they better hard to say more consistant yes and that gives me some peace of mind when i'm up on the line shooting my string.

Ditto stomp442 - accuracy and hunting combined. In my 6.5x55 Swede stock factory Featherweight Win 70 with 22" barrel, the 140 Berger hunting VLD is jumping over 0.25" - that's right, 250 thousandths! With Varget 36.0 grains in a Rem case, that yields 0.292" 5-shot 100 yd group, and it's still supersonic at 1,000 yds. The factory throated this rifle to make sure the mil-surp 160 gr. bullets would not jam into the lands. 155 grain .308 Berger hunting VLD also jumping a lot (mag length in a Savage 10FC) with LC cases and Varget 45.5 grains manages 0.38". That was the first load I tried. Most of the F-class gunners I have seen shoot Bergers, with the only difference being that they run their bullets through a bullet pointer.
My usual bullets are Nosler or Sierra match bullets, but these two guns are for hunting, and nothing else for hunting comes close to Berger hunting VLD's for B.C. or accuracy, and they kill 'em good. I think Nosler and Sierra will do the same, but cannot guarantee without a demonstration, which I probably won't bother to do.

41.5 gr. H4350, fed 210m primers ,hornady cases berger 140gr. Vld sorted by ogive . Seated .110 off the lands cases neck sized .I tried going up on the powder but found this the most accurate load for my rifle

We were chronograph'n several different loads and bullets @ 600 yds. We used different colored stickies on the target as we swaped loads/bullets. Bergers by far were the best. It was great to see the different bullets seperated by the different color stickies. Berger's were red dots. At 600 yds it held the best vertical and windage by far. I wish I had a picture of the targets to post.
