Just got a new Axis in 308 and was thinking Id like to have a 10rd magazine. I know it has been done before so I wont bore anyone with the gory details. My plan is to take a G3 magazine(steel mags can be had for around $5)which is the same width, cut it down and tig weld the Axis magazine to it. Then I will use the spring from the G3 mag (cut down slightly) and either machine a latch for it or take the floorplate from the axis magazine and use it to position and retain the box mag. I will be taking pictures to document the modification if anyone is interested.

I know someone is doing it and I said so in my post. Im doing it for myself, and Im going to post the details so that others that want to do it can. I dont believe in holding information that may be useful to others.

I would be very interested in this mod. I had contacted z71rat about his mags but yet to receive a reply(I know he is probably very busy).

I don't think z71rat can be accused of withholding information. He has posted bunches of photos of his process and described it in detail.

I have helped out many different people on the magazines. Yes, I have posted around 70 pics of the process, and I got in trouble for it. So I don't post them anymore. But I will gladly help out anyone with a need for the magazines, for Savage centerfeeds, as well as the Axis/Edge.

Trent, thanks for the kind words Brother!!

Didnt mean to offend anyone. I think z71Rat has done an awesome job with his build and being the pioneer of this mod. I just meant that since I posted about what I was doing I would be happy to share the info with anyone that wanted it. I dont like when people post that they are doing "x" and then never provide any details. Thats not my idea of being a good 'citizen" in the gun community.

No offense taken. Just wanted to add some clarification is all.

Ok so I did some work on the box mag today. It consisted of removing the spring and follower and cutting the G3 mag down to a suitable length. Next step is to remove the floor plate from the Axis mag (as soon as I figure out how), and prepping the 2 mags to be tig/spot welded together. I cut the magazine with a hacksaw so I could get a nice straight cut and then squared it up on my belt/disc sander.

U would have a lot less work if you use m-14 mags for short actions and bar mags for long actions, just saying , ben there done that

The M-14 magazines are about 10 times more expensive. You can pick up the old H&K mags for under 3 bucks. Also, the mini-14 is a .223rem... I'm not sure those mags would be the right dimensions to match up to the Savage DBM magazine.

How is it less work? You still have to cut the magazine and morph the two together. If you have a different way of doing this let us know.

I think he means M-14/M1A Magazines. Yes they are way too expensive for my cheap butt. I don't see it as being a problem as soon as I get the 2 mags together should be done.

I just ordered a couple of G3 mags yesterday to do a conversion on 1 or 2 of my factory model 12 mags.

No CUTTING INVOLVED! THE PROBLEM WITH USING THE FACTORY MAG SURROND AS YOU RETENTION ,IS ONCE YOU LOAD THE MAG WITH 10 -20 ROUNDS OF AMMO ,YOU ARE STRESSING THE PLASTIC CLIP HOLDING THE WHOLE MAG IN THE RIFLE. NO MINI 14 ,ITS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY FOR A QUALITY 20 round mag.ITS ALWAYS BETTER TO MODIFY THE GUN TO TAKE AVAILABLE MAGS THEN TO MODIFY EACH MAG TO FIT THE GUN.

Well thats why I will be making a machined part to replace the plastic clip. For me its only going to be one maybe 2 mags I make so no big deal. You do it your way Ill do it mine. To each his own, thats what makes this country great.
