View Full Version : One powder versus another for hot barrel?

Maybe be a silly question..

But is there such a thing as one powder causing a barrel
to heat upfaster than another powder...
In other words suppose you shoot 15 rounds in a 20 minute
period with powder x and do the same with powder y...

Will the both heat the same or different? Thanks

I was noticing the difference this weekend.

I have been shooting varget for my AR. Last weekend, I was at a gunshow and picked up a pound of CFE to try out. (It is a ball powder, that flows all over the place. ) When testing out CFE plinker loads, I noticed I could pick my brass up as soon as I shot that round. With Varget, I need to wait for the brass to cool for a minute or two. It also appeared that CFE kicked the rounds out with a little less soot and carbon on them too.

Haven't done enough testing with my CFE yet, But definitely!
That is why my match loads for the 308 use 748, and NOT Varget. The barrel heating difference is noticeable.
Also found that with the 223 and high volume shooting.

The point was, that Varget is hotter than at least 1 alternative.
So your question about a difference, YES there are flame temp differences.

After trying the steamy pile that is RL-22 I stay away from that series of powder.

I heard re 17 was a very hot burner....least I think that was the number no it was re 22 that burned up the barrel on a
7mmmag easterener or whatever it was called

Anyone have any experience with h335 and how hot it burns?
