I have a savage 110 in .223 that I bought for my dad to deer hunt with after he had shoulder surgery. He used it that one season and has now given it back to me. I'd like to try my hand at changing the caliber to a 6.5 Grendel or something like that. I'll also cut the stock and make it a dedicated kid's gun. I'd like to keep the cost under $300.
What do you suggest? Where do I get the barrel and parts?
Is there a cartridge that would use the same bolt?
Thank you for your help.

well to keep it under 300 bucks i suggest you get a barrel from gunshack. when they have the next 6.5 group buy just order a grendel. Lance also has factory ppc boltheads but i don't think he has any for a long action. If you do have the 110 and not the 10 then you will need a long action 223 bolt head opened up to take the ppc/7.62x39 size case head. The barrel in the group buy has been running about 170-180 bucks. SSS can open your bolt head up and put the correct extractor in it.

I have 2 Grendel barrels now and am waiting on a heavy target barrel. I have not gone past 300 yards but so far i am well pleased with how it is doing.

Well I must have that wrong! It is a short action so it must be a model 10. I'll have to check when I get home.
Thanks. I'll watch for the group buy.

Yea you have a 10 if it's .223 caliber. You'll need a new boltface and magazine. BTW I heard this second hand but the Savages may have trouble with the magazine with the Grendel. I have a Savage 10 action i want to rebarrel to ,260 Remington but I can't find a light sporter barrel.

If you have a model 10 centerfeed just call savage and talk to Effie. She can help you out with the mag. Get the one for 7.62x39. Works like a dream. I know this because i have 2 centerfeed grendels. You will be limited on oal because of the spacer built into the mag but factory ammo and handloads built to fit work just fine with the 7.62x39 mag and bolthead. I have found that Lapua 7.62x39 brass is a tight fit in the bolthead for some reason so i quit trying to form grendel brass and hornady brass doesn't want to size very well after the first shot. I have gone to Alexander Arms branded grendel brass which is made by Lapua. Cheapest brass i have found. On sale this weekend for 55 bucks a hundred and is regularly only about 2 dollars more than Hornady brass per 100. I run 123 Lapua's over 30.0 grains of BLC-2. As always work up to that load. Not a lot of info out there yet on reloading unless you go to the grendel forum but i like the little bugger.

Thank you for that information. I didn't know I'd need a mag. I'll contact Savage. I'm still trying to find a barrel. In addition I see I will need a wrench and gauges.

Become a paid member (only $12.00 annually) and you will be able to access the classifieds. Might find what you want there.

I got a reply from the Gun Shack folks. They said it would be 4 to 5 months if I place an order today. Does anyone have any other recommended barrel sources? Louisiana gun season opens mid October.

mtcur where in La are you? I have go gauge and wrenches and would take about 5 minutes to put it together if you are close. I am in sw Ar about 35 miles from Minden. As for a barrel you will have to look around and call around to find someone to make a barrel and get it to you in a month. That would give you about 2 weeks to get it together and sighted in. You can try sin-arms, Devin might have a reamer and be able to get it out to you but not going to bet on it. SSS has the reamer but with Fred's workload i don't see getting a barrel in less than 2 or 3 months

I found 300 Blackout E.R. Shaw barrels at Midway for $149. This seems like it would be a very easy swap. Same bolt? Same magazine?

I think they are and would get the youngin hunting this fall but i suggest a little research on the blackout. I have heard both good and bad about the accuracy of them. Also will be a even shorter range round but should take care of our small frame deer within it's range limits.

OK, I did some looking around and see what you mean about the blackout. It seems like I need to put this project aside for this season. The kids have been killing our little Louisiana deer with the .223 for 12 years now. One more year will be fine.
Thanks to all for your input.

earl39, I'm near N.O., but have family near Homer. Thanks for the offer. That's kind of you.

Well you can always get the 260 from midway. It shows the same in stock date as the blackout.
