I have been considering buying a new rifle. I want one in .204 Ruger. In the future I intend to buy another barrel for this rifle in .223 Rem. I was looking at the one of the new Model 11 Trophy Hunters in a local shop today and noticed that they have changed the barrel nut to a smooth surface instead of the slotted nut that I am accustomed to seeing on Savage rifles. I am wondering how you can change out the barrels with this type of smooth nut. Do they have another wrench for this type of nut. I couldn't take off the stock to see if there was any slots on the underside of the barrel nut. I want to be able to use this action for .223 in the future if I want to, so I need to know if it is possible or not. Thanks.

you can either cut it off and replace with the original or get this tool at SSS:
Smooth Barrel Nut Wrench
New “smooth” barrel nut wrench, used on the new Accustock rifles with the 1.350” diameter completely smooth nut, and some select models with the single hole spanner nut.

Price: $45.00

Yes, there is at least 1 slot. Takes a spanner type wrench, I think I saw the ad from one of our advertisers, perhaps Fred...?
Or you can always use a pipe wrench.

Use a pipe wrench and replace it with the old style sloted nut

Ok guys thanks! I'll take a look and make a decision. I don't have a problem replacing the new nut with the slotted older style. The old style never really bothered me anyway and makes life much easier if you want to change to a different barrel.
