Why are my baffle sides different sizes??

Just took apart my new gun, it is a model 11 300WSM. Unlike all other guns I've seen, the lugs on the baffle on this bolt are thicker on one side than the other. What is the deal with this? Will it affect anything as I replace parts for a build? Do I need to replace it for a .243 conversion, is the receiver (large shank) cut differently to accommodate this staggered baffle?

Are you speaking of the actual locking lugs or the baffle to the rear of the lugs (part the rotates on the bolt body?

Sounds like you're looking at the gas baffles and not the actual locking lugs themselves. The baffles are right behind the lugs and usually the one on the right is cut a little shorter to add bolt travel to accomodate the WSM's. The right side baffle is what hits the bolt stop in the rear of the receiver. The shorter/thinner it is the further back the bolt can travel. The actual locking lugs should be the same size.

Yes, that is exactly what I am talking about, sorry for the poor terminology, my post in now modified. My baffle looks just like the one on the far right in the pic -- will this affect anything concerning the caliber switch to a non WSM round (243)? I know someone mentioned bolt travel, but what is the more detailed explanation of how this piece works/what it does and why it is different than other rifles in standard case sizes (.308, 243)

In addition to the pic, Fred posted the differences...



L to R
- short action (7/16" lugs)
- short action controlled round feed(1/2" lugs)
- long action (1/2" lugs)
- new short action heavy magnum (9/16" lugs)

The new heavy magnum bolt head requires the new relieved front baffle,(shown to the right) and also a longer firing pin. The new heavy magnum bolt head is replacing the short action CRF bolt head, as the CRF is not needed on the new center feed magazines for the WSM line of cartridges.
