Speaking of barrels....

I have a brand new .270 Savage barrel I bought 8 months ago. I just changed it out on one of my '06's. (does that make it a 30.270? or is it a 270.06?...)

Is it necessary / worth going thru break in procedure? Since it's a factory tube, does it need that TLC we normally afford those hi dollar, big buck barrels we buy? Or should I not be concerned with break in & just have at it and keep it down to 2 to 3 rounds & let it cool thoroughly?

I think that a factory barrel needs to be broken in more than a custom barrel does. Most high end barrels have been lapped my the maker while I do not believe that factory barrels get this extra step. So, if the purpose of breaking in a barrel is to smooth out the throat and bore wouldn't it make scene to do it more to the rougher barrel? Of course my opinion and a $1 will get you a cup of coffee at Micky D's.

No, it makes it a .270- ....that's the "chambering"

Depends on what case you put behind the .277 inch bullet, and how the chamber is reamed.

Example, I shoot a 7mm.-08.

It's got the same 7mm (.284) bullet, same as any "7mm" rifle, but it's based off of the .308 cartridge, necked down for 7mm bullets instead of the .308 bullet...

Frank I have taken my factory barrels and done it both ways ie:shoot and clean or just plain shoot then clean, ends up it just doesn't matter.Take it shoot it to sight it in, run 20 or so rounds through it then clean it real good. Next time you go do the same then don't clean until it starts to loose accuracy.My money is on you will not see a difference.
On a side not don't do this during the impending storm, stay home and stay safe.

Ya know froggy - I've had the same experience.

My first '06 I bought several years ago was shot till it glowed in the late afternoon sun from overheating. I still have it & I still shoot it. AND.... it's still pretty accurate with 53.4gr of 4350 under a 150gr Nosler.

I guess I'll just forego to formality of a break in & jump right into a healthy dose of OCW testing.
