I just saw in the sales flyer for Academy Sports (if you have one near you) that Stevens 200 rifles are $199. That is quite a steal. I called my local store to confirm, they have several, and it is the true and correct price.

Just wanted to let ya'll know.

A guy at work told me about that today. Do you happen to know when the sale ends?

In Birmingham,AL the sale is only for .270 and 7mm-08. They had a lot of .270s and a few 7mm-08s when I went by today. Usually their sales run for a week.

They had two less 7mm-08s when I left. One is gonna be a Mcgowan varmint barrel/ Stockade Woodchuck .260. Haven't decided yet about the other, but thinking hard about a short .338 Federal.

I bought one today in Tulsa, OK. Got a .270 they have the tan stocks, no sights, total was about $215.00, they had both .270 and 7mm08.
might make a .35 whelen for hunting.

So, for the switch-barrel enthusiast contemplating building a 7mm-08 sporter barrel onto one of their actions for deer hunting, they could expect to see some takeoff 22" 7mm-08 barrels show up on gunbroker or in the member classifieds soon eh???

For some reason I have become resposible with my money! can't figure it out maybe the girlfriend and kids have changed my thinking couldn't tell ya. I think I may need some group therapy since there are 2 Academy stores on the way home ;D I just hate to put more on the plastic though with the way things are going in the world and I have my (HOPEFULLY GOOD!) tax return like my man cave reloading room. Dang what could I build what could I build? I sure am glad they don't have these in 223 or I would have already gotten one. Later,

Kirk

I just called my local Gander Mountain. They do not price match on firearms, if they did I would have a few new Stevens' at this price.

Picked one up today in 7mm-08. Project number three about to begin!

Can any new 7mm-08 owner confirm the barrel twist rate? There seems to be conflicting data suggesting that unlike the Savage 1:11.5 twist, the Steven's are 1:9.5 twist. Thanks, Hoot

I was just in the Academy in Austin last weekend looking at these and talking to the manager for quite a while about them -- they had about 10 270's and the manager was telling me how they don't normally carry them and they just got them in for Black Friday, but I should check the ads because they'd probably be running a sale on them pretty soon to get rid of the rest that hadn't sold yet. I checked the ad on Sunday, no dice, left for Wisconsin for a few weeks on Wednesday, and now they go on sale:( No academy's up here! I don't feel as bad because I just bought a new savage today, but that is a heck of a deal! The gun was also different than the others I'd seen, had a very nice recoil pad, very much like the ones that PAD that savage had. Also they were brown not grey. Too bad, could have had a long action... but probably for the best after all.

Since you asked, I measured the twist of my new 7mm-08 Stevens 200, purchased at Academy for $199 on Wednesday.
It's 11.5".

Of course I'm new to the board, and probably didn't do enough homework prior to my purchase.

Only 2 days in and I'm a little frustrated to discover that my 7mm-08 has a suboptimal barrel twist, and that I won't be able to upgrade my stock in the future with an Accustock takeoff.

Naturally, I bought two boxes of ammo at Academy with the gun: Remington CoreLokt 140 gr pointed soft point. There was no 120gr on the shelf. What can I expect with this ammo?

Hey GunnerD, you got a great deal any way you look at it! You could have a great hunting rifle right now for ridiculously cheap or put a good amount of work into it (new trigger, stock, barrel, T&T action, etc) and still be sitting ahead of the game with such a cheap original purchase. My father deer hunts with a Stevens 7mm-08 11.5" twist most of the time, and that gun off the shelf will shoot about 1.5 - 2 inch groups with core lokts and a $50 tasco on a cheap set of bases and rings. For hunting, that's good enough to hit a deer heart at 200 yards every time, lungs a lot further than that. You could get smaller groups if you're target shooting and buy top shelf ammo, although I haven't seen much target ammo in that caliber up here where I live.

Hey if any of you decide you don't want the stevens 200
in any caliber I want first chance to buy it for the price you paid for it.
I didn't get a chance to get one in my area.
