Looking to dissolve/break free some blue loctite. Any suggestions?

Didn't really know where to post this.

Heat works well......

Thanks for the reply. I've found a few posts about using small butane torches etc. The only question I have is whether this will affect the action's temper. Its a PTA, and I don't want to accidentally mess it up getting it too hot. Thoughts?

hair dryer. You get it hot enough to hurt the temper you went WAY overboard! put the heat on the screw.

If you are just trying to break a scope mount screw loose, use a soldering iron directly on the screw head.

Heat guns work well for this application as well.

I've used blue loctite for years and never had a problem with turning it loose with what ever tool was used to torque it down. Red loctite might be a different story but have had no experience with it. Quick

Was actually trying to break a barrel free from the action. Had only put a dab on the threads but just couldn't get it free. Didn't want two use too much heat and hurt the barrel or the action so I just heated up some water and poured it over where the barrel threads into the action. Was just hot enough that you could touch it for a bit but didn't want to hang on for too long. Worked like a charm- thanks to all for the replies.

No need to use Loctite on barrel threads or screw threads. Use oil and adequate torque instead. If the screws seem to come loose later, purple Loctite is the correct one.

I had many gooseneck micophones with the head attached with Blue. Used a heat gun all the time, never hurt the delicate innards. I could handle them with my bare hands upon separation, so they weren't dangerously hot.

I think a hair dryer would work if you had a good one.

I like the hot water trick, but could never have used that.

Yeah probably wouldn't have too worked on electronics. Blow dryer may have worked, but I didn't know if it would heat through well enough. The water was by no means boiling, but pretty warm. Just held the barrel over the sink and turned it while pouring the water over it. Again, worked great.

For the future, brake cleaner eats loctite pretty well. I have never used it on a blued steel but the stuff can be pretty nasty on paint and stocks.

Yeah I didn't want to use any chemicals, was really impressed at how well the hot water worked.
