Not an absolute expert here but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last week...

Instead of trying to take all the necessary measurements and then cutting the barrel and simply re-threading a small portion of the shank to make it work...I'd recommend cutting off an inch of the chamber end and then having the entire (most of it) chamber re-cut/reamed to final spec...this will give you the option of setting the bullets contact with the throat AND eliminate the portion of the old barrels throat that may have some past erosion...yes it is doable...would the end result be cost effective to you simply buying a good used or new barrel in 30-06? And having a a spare barrel in .308 that uses the same bolt face? Up to you...

Your shoulder diam is smaller on 06 ,the neck is longer on 06 ,so is the leade .06 handles upto 220 gr . Nenk diam is close enough , not worth the time. Unless you have the reamer and lathe to cut more threads or cut a relief at threads end or cut barrel nut

Sounds like a lot of labor just to go to a 308. Don't get me wrong....if you really wanna do it and you have the resources, then by all means. But I didn't price out the brass cost of the 06 vs the 308. I do know that you can load down the 06 to 308 velocity, but you can't load up the 308 to 06 velocities.

FWIW
