Newby to this forum. I have just acquired a model 340 in 30-30 which has two ( not four) holes tapped near the rear of the action. Is this gun scope ready ( without drilling and tapping) ?

Came with Marble's open sights installed. Very few other distinguishing marks.

Please oh Savage Guru's, help this Mauser addict.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Steve85569

i have a 340 in 222rem. and the scope mount mounts on the left side of the action. no need for drilling, the screw holes are already there.

first came no holes, then mid production, 2 holes were added for a peep site. late production came with 4 holes.
you would have to add 2 for the scope mount.

Steve, the holes on your gun are for a Savage made peep sight called a WFC #175.

Theres one on Fleabay right now, just type in "target peep sight".

I used to have a 340 with a little 2.25X Boone scope on it, sold the gun and kept the scope for a 340 in 222.

Thanks to Blue Avenger and Mad Dog.

Looks like I'm going to either leave the old 340 with open sights or do a custom bracket for the existing two holes. Seems that I have an old scout mount from Dad's leftovers the I could use as a pattern.

After all, its only a 30-30. I don't need anything more than 4 power on it. No sense being able to target something the you can't knock down. That's what the more powerful loads are for.

Thanks again guys. I'm glad I found this forum. We've got a couple of other vintage Savage Arms tools in one cabinet or the other ( his and hers ).
